Rebel Streets in conjunction with Cruinniú na nÓg -
Graffiti Workshop at Cork Traveller Visibility Group
In June 2021, we worked with Cork Traveller Visibility Group to paint graffiti on the side of their building on Lower John St as part of our ongoing project Rebel Streets in conjunction with Cruinniú na nÓg and Creative Ireland. We had children from the Travelling community engage with spray cans, paint and stencils, and as you can see below they had a lot of fun!
Our thanks to Creative Ireland, Cork City Arts, Cork City Council, The Arts Council, and Pat McDonnell Paints for their generous support. |
Rebel Streets 2021 - Mural at Cork Traveller Visibility Group
In late 2020, Cork Traveller Visibility Group and Cork Community Art Link commenced a collaboration on a mural for their premises at 25 Lower John Street, Cork city.
TVG and CCAL shared resources sourced and found such as photographs, text and videos encapsulating Irish Traveller culture and history. From these discussions, CCAL’s artists designed a vibrant, colourful mural.
The mural features a horseshoe and fist emblem in the gable, representing Traveller activism, the Traveller Ethnicity pin on the right hand side, sun rays to represent positivity, and on the ground floor, figures from the community in silhouette and a trailer at the door.
The decision was made to align the mural with CCAL’s annual project Rebel Streets, a strategy supported by Creative Ireland. Creative Ireland is an all-of-government five-year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy.
Beginning on Monday the 14th of June, CCAL’s full crew began work at the TVG building. Below are some photos of the mural and crew at work!
