Cork Community Art Link have been involved in the Cork St Patrick’s Day Parade for a large part of the past three decades and we didn't want to let the day pass without marking it. Therefore, we are grateful to Cork City Council for offering us the opportunity to present an alternative plan to celebrate our heritage, our past, and our communities whilst looking forward to a better future.
As a community art organization, our goal is to include and to involve as many individuals as possible in our project under the circumstances.
We have been working with a small team, holding remote meetings and working to create what we hope will be a real lift to the people of Cork and beyond.
The installation includes three main elements; a stained glass window, an audiopiece and three large songbird sculptures.
The three songbirds were designed by Artistic Director William and Assistant Director Beibhinn, and created by Lead Technician Sam, with support by Art Worker Eamonn.
The stained glass window, featuring the Goddess Clíodhna was designed and created by Artists Podge and Raffaele, and features drawings created by Mikayla and Jack from the CCAL Young Comic Creation group. The process included cutting paper, layering coloured gels and mounting the sides on to perspex, completed to appear like a stained glass window. This will be mounted in a wooden frame created by Sam, and when installed will have the sound-piece created by Audio Artist Ruairí, featuring poetry submitted by the people of Cork and beyond, who shared a voice-note recording of their favourite poetry. Ruairí has created this wonderful sound-piece incorporating the poetry received, layered with original music, and birdsong recorded right here in Ireland.
The online audio-piece is accompanied by a video documenting the creative process, with images, videos and time-lapse shared by our crew, from initial sketches to finished pieces, and compiled by General Manager Michelle.
Our creative team was supported by Manager Michelle, Administrator and Artist Nadia and PR Consultant Geri.

A Tale of Cork
As myths and legends play a significant role in our folklore, heritage and culture, we took inspiration from the legend of Clíodhna, a patron of Cork, queen of the banshees and an Irish goddess of love and beauty. Part of her story tells us that she had three brightly coloured birds who eat from an other worldly tree and whose sweet songs heal the sick. Watch, listen and enjoy!
Cork Community Art Link asked the people of Cork and beyond to share a voicenote recording their favourite poetry - and the people delivered! Many people contributed to become part of this celebration of St. Patrick's Day 2021. CCAL Art Worker Ruairí Dale has created this wonderful soundpiece incorporating the poetry received, layered with original music, and birdsong recorded right here in Ireland. This video also documents the creative process, with images, videos and time-lapse shared by our crew, from initial sketches to finished pieces. |
Scéal ó Chorcaigh
Os rud é go mbaineann seanchas agus fínscéalaíocht go mór lenár mbéaloideas, lenár n-oidhreacht agus lenár gcultúr, fuaireamar spreagadh ó Scéal Chlíodhna, bandia Chorcaí, banríon na mban sí agus bandia Gaelach an ghrá agus na háilleachta. Insíonn cuid dá scéil dúinn go raibh trí éan sárdhaite aici a ítheann ó chrann osnádúrtha agus a leigheasann a gceol binn lucht breoite. This video follows the creative process of designing Clíodhna, the Patron Goddess of Love and Beauty in Cork. The design was created by Artist Raffaele Muraca in collaboration with Podge Daly and Cork Community Art Link.
The final illustration was used to create a large 'stained glass' frame, which will be temporarily installed in Bishop Lucey Park in Cork City, Ireland in 2021. |
EALTA (Flock)
A Collaboration between visual artist Rachel Doolin and Cork Community Art Link.
EALTA (flock) is a project conceived by artist Rachel Doolin in response to and anticipation of
Cork Community Artlink’s St. Patricks Day installation, which has been Inspired by the
legend of the Goddess Cliodhna, Patron of Cork and the healing melody of her three other-
worldly songbirds.
Cork Community Artlink along with Little Bird Babble artist Rachel Doolin invites all
members of the public, children and adults alike to join their virtual FLOCK!
Participants will be invited to find a suitable outdoor spot to create an EARTHBIRD. These
curious beasts full of whimsy and wonder will be dotted all over Cork City and County and
beyond! Made entirely from found organic matter, an EARTHBIRD is a symbol of hope,
healing, togetherness and care. A symbol to be discovered and bring a smile to a passer-by.
A resource sheet will be made available on Cork Community Artlink’s website outlining the
details and how to get involved. Rachel Doolin has also made a short animation to inspire
your creations!
We can’t wait to see your EARTHBIRDS.
